Recently declared a National Historic Landmark by the US federal government, Blackbeard's Castle (or Blackbeard's Tower) was built by the Danish in 1679. Constructed of rubble and masonry, Blackbeard's Castle print Skytsborg Tower (meaning 'sky tower'), was originally used as a watchtower for Charlotte Amalie harbor below. Situated at the highest point on Government Hill, it offered an excellent vantage point to spot enemy ships before they entered the harbor, thus giving Fort Christian ample time to prepare a defense with cannon fire from its sea level position.

US Virgin Islands flag No one knows exactly when the tower started being associated with Blackbeard, but local lore says that he used it as a vantage point of his own or perhaps even a residence. Today, it is part of a hotel and restaurant complex - The Inn at Blackbeard's Castle, which offers unparalleled views of the capital of the US Virgin Islands.
